DBS Checks for Hospital staff

Our hospitals are as important now as they have ever been which means that preventing unsuitable people from having access to vulnerable individuals in receipt of healthcare is paramount. One of the best ways to do this is by conducting a DBS check.

But who is eligible for which level of check?

With over 100 years combined experience, our Client Administrators have pulled together some important information to help you.

Enhanced Checks

As we mentioned in a previous blog titled DBS Checks for NHS Staff, Enhanced Checks are for those roles that are frequently engaged in Regulated Activity with Adults or Regulated Activity with Children. As well as an Enhanced Check, they will also be eligible for a check against either the Adult’s Barred List, Child’s Barred List or both.

Typical roles that would be eligible for an Enhanced Check in a Hospital would be a Doctor or a Nurse. Hospital Patient Porters that are conveying patients due to age, illness or disability for them to receive healthcare or personal care are also eligible for an Enhanced Check as this is classed as Regulated Activity.

Standard Checks

If an individual is not carrying out Regulated Activity but they have access to persons in receipt of such services in the course of their normal duties, they will be eligible for a Standard Check. Some typical roles that are eligible for a Standard Check within a hospital are Cleaners, Catering Staff, Ward Hosts, Contractors and even Receptionists.

Hospital Porters that only transport equipment would be eligible for a Standard Check as their role would mean that they have access to vulnerable persons in receipt of Regulated Activity.

Basic Checks

Call handlers working for the Telephone Advice Service may only be eligible for a Basic Check if their role is to provide directory services ONLY. For example, if they are giving contact details for health services or redirecting calls through to healthcare professionals who then provide care, advice or guidance to an adult or child.

There may be occasions where some roles may only be eligible for a Basic check, however it is definitely best to check with our staff to be sure.
