DBS Adult First Check
Formerly known as ISA Adult First or POVA can be requested with an enhanced check and allows an individual to start work under supervision while waiting for their full disclosure result. Frequently asked questions
A DBS Adult First check is not appropriate where a person intends to work with both children and adults. Those working with both groups will need to wait for the full DBS Certificate to be returned to find out whether a person is barred from working with children.
This service is only available to organisations who are eligible to access the DBS’s Adult barred list and who have requested a check of the barred lists on their DBS application
DBS Adult First is not a substitute for a DBS Certificate and providers must take care when making recruitment decisions prior to receiving a full DBS Certificate.
These are normally completed within 24 hours but can take up to 72 hours.
A DBS Adult First check result comes with 2 possible outcomes.
‘No match exists for this person on the current DBS Vulnerable Adults list’
This means the applicant is not barred from working with vulnerable adults and can start work in a supervised capacity until the full enhanced disclosure is produced.
‘Please wait until you receive the paper Disclosure certificate from DBS before making a recruitment decision regarding this applicant’
This means that the DBS Certificate may include offences or the DBS was unable to uniquely identify the applicant. This means that the applicant would not be allowed to work straight away.
